Dimensioning Counterbores & Countersinks

Dimensioning Counterbores & Countersinks

Dimensioning Counterbores & Countersinks

(OP)
Most of the time when I use countersink holes, I can't use the Hole Wizard.  This is because I work in sheetmetal, and I have to suppress the countersinks to get an accurate flat pattern for our laser.  This means in the drawing I have to manually build the drawing callout for counter sinks.  I have to indicate the thru hole diameter, then the countersink diameter and angle.  This is time consuming to say the least.

The problem with this is that only 1 dimension will update if the part changes.  In my case, it's the countersink diameter.

A work around for this is to dimension the thru hole and then dimension the countersink diameter.  Then create a Note, keeping the note active, click on your countersink dims to insert them into your note.  Form here, you can add the holes symbols (diameter, degree, countersink, ect).  This methods updates both dimensions should the feature cahnge in the model.  Again, this is a time consuming task as not all the symbols are in the same menus.  I've submitted an enhancement request, ref 147249.

I'm wondering if anyone else has a better solution?

Why don't you use the hole wizard and make the holes but, make 2 configurations and suppress holes in one? Then use that config for a view in your drawing.

This means in the drawing I have to manually build the drawing callout for counter sinks.  I have to indicate the thru hole diameter, then the countersink diameter and angle.  This is time consuming to say the least.

Then use a different view and call out the other config showing the countersunk holes?

When I suppress the HWiz countersinks, I loose the locational data for the holes.  By having a seperate thru hole and countersink, I am able to just suppress the countersink, while still leaving the hole in the flat pattern.  This reflects our manufacturing process, in that they take the flat pattern after laser cut, then add teh countersinks prior to forming operations.

RE: Dimensioning Counterbores & Countersinks

What about this idea.

1) Make a sketch and use points. Fully dimension those points on the face that you want to make the countersunk holes on.

2) Insert HWZ holes and use those points of the previous sketch to control the positions of the HWZ holes.

Then you can suppress the holes without losing the actual hole positions.

I'll post it at my site. http://www.scottjbaugh.com/Design_Portfolio/SW%20Models.htm
