sw 2003 installation problem

sw 2003 installation problem

(OP)
Hi people!, I've installed sw 2003 in win xp and when I try to execute the program this message appears: "Failed to initialize Visual Basic for Apps, equations and macros will not work", could someone help me?, it`s been a pain since 3 months ago and I can`t fix it. I have excel installed and also the win XP service pack 1 and nothing works...
Thank you
Piper

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

Did you have anti-virus software running when you installed? If so, disable it and reinstall. I would blow away the current install before I reinstalled, just to be sure.

Mr. Pickles

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

And another thing. What version of Excel are you installing? If it is old (pre-2000 ???) it won't work.

Hi there!,
Problems... I tried the clean install, disabled the AV when installing, erased all previous installs and files and I got the same error... I swear to kiss the one with the solution to this nightmare.
Thanks anyway
Piper

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

piper71,

Again, what version of Excel are you installing?

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

Hi there.  I've got the very same problem, and so far, SW 2003 does not work.  SW keeps showing the same error message that piper71 says.  I've got an ahtlon XP +2000 machine and a Nvidia GeForce MX with 64MB.  My MS Office version is the XP one.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/videocardreport.html The GF MX has not been tested with XP home (Which is not supported) or XP Pro. But from results that are already given, I would bet it will not be a Green passing card. 64MB isn't the problem its the chipset on the board.

Neither of you specified which XP...XP Pro, or XP home?

I have XP Pro with SW01+ and SW03 installed. My MS Office is 2000 SP3, and I haven't had a problem with either installing it or running it. If you have followed the FAQ above when trying to reinstall it and that didn't work. Then it's time for a more drastic Regclean. You will have to follow the FAQ up to where it starts cleaning out the registery. Once you are in the Registery editor. Start in the first folder and run a search for "Solidworks" and delete everything pertaining to SW. If your not sure don't remove it, just keep going.

IMPORTANT: YOU HAVE TO BE COMFORTABLE IN IN CHANGING THE REGISTERY, BECAUSE IT COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR OS IF YOU REMOVE THE WRONG DATA

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

My XP version is the Professional one.  I did all that the FAQ says, but it still doesn't run... If you have more ideas, it would be nice.  Gee... Thanks anyway.  It is good to know that you can receive some support from the net.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

No personal experience with SW 2003 yet, but I justed wanted to say in general "uninstalling" is NOT the same as the havoc-wreaking act of deleting program folders etc.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

I hesitate to respond, as I really don't want a big wet kiss thank you.....   (Besides, my wife might get all upset if she found out.)

However I might add that on my home system I run SW2003 with Office/Excel 97 and is works fine.

I have seen the same problem once (two weeks ago) on a single machine and it appeared to relate the order in which we had loaded SW and (in this case) SmarTeam.  We blew it all away and reloaded and all is now well.

One other cause of similar error messages is if you are accessing Office over a network.  It needs to be installed locally on your machine. That info' was buried somewhere in the release notes way back and I have not heard of any changes to that status.  BTW: If this is the problem, I seem to recall you have to blow away SW before you load Office locally, then reload SW, otherwise the reg entries for still look for the network version for SW.

Once again, I suggest you request your VAR to get his/her rear end over to your site and fix your problem - that's what you are paying your annual support fee for!

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

hi am getting this error messgae with SW 2004

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

Well, I assume you have installed SW properly and still have the problem.

This might be to a bit hard if you don't know PC well, but I will try to make it straight forward.
1. Go to your user profile. The default is "C:\Documents and Settings\{your login name}"
2. Right click on "Application Data" and select "Properties"
3. Click "Security" tab and find your name addition to "Administrators" and "SYSTEM"
4. Click on your name and see if you have "Full Control"

If you can't find your name or you don't have "Full Control", that could be the cause.

You need to have administration privilege to fix this. If you don't, ask your IT or administrator.
Easiest way to make sure is create a new user profile. Logon with the new user name and see if the problem is fixed. If so, the problem was caused by the incorrect privilege of your user profile. I believe you want to keep all environment you had, so logon as administrator and assign you to "Application Data" or give "Full Control" to you. There might be other folders that are screwed up too. Go to "C:\Documents and Settings" and right click on your name and select "Properties" Then, you can assign "Full Control" to all folders under your user profile.

If you don't care about your old profile, just start working with the new logon name. It's safest way to go.

If this works, give me a pink star instead of kiss

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

Have you told XP to run SolidWorks under Win 2000?  I have XP-pro at home and as I recall, I had to tell it to run SW under a different OS before it would run.  It's been a while since I did it, so I don't remember where you set it in XP and I am not at home to look for it.  XP is not certified for SW, but the XP OS has the ability to emulate most of the earlier Win OS's. Rummage thru the control panel, it's in there somewhere.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

Hey, I finally remembered to look on XP Pro at home.

It is not in the control panel at all, I was remembering all wrong.  Go to the SolidWorks program files and right click on the executable for SW.  In the dialog box that pops up, there is a compatability tab where you can tell XP to run in NT or 2000 compatability mode.  This fixed all my problems running under XP.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

Hi Piper 71

I have the same problem that you. Do you find the solution?

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

You should not have to run on XP in 2000 mode.  That's a crutch.

Seems like this is a common issue and must have a simple (but obviously elusive) answer.  One of you must be paying annual service contract surely?  (You ALL should!)  Go and grab you VAR by the short and curlies and don't let go till he explains the problem and provides a fix.  Then for goodness sake publish it for everyone.  Our VAR would never let this situation go like this.  You can bet your life someone at SolidWorks knows what the issue is and your VAR can call them if they need to.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

I still believe a permission of your user profile causes the problem.

Did any of you who have the problem tried what I suggested earlier? Again, an easiest way to make sure is create a new user profile ( a new logon account) and see if the problem is gone. If so, follow my instruction to fix.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

I got the error message as well and i have tried to install again and again with nothing running at background but it still give me the same error. BTW i am very sure that i am an administrator.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

If you have Administrator privilege, (if not get it or ask)

<Easy way if you don't know about PC>
1. Right click on "My Computer" and select "manage".
2. Scroll down to "Local Users and Groups" and expand by clicking "+".
3. Right click on "Users" and select "New User..."
4. Create a new user profile. The new user can belong to "Group" of "Users" or you can assign "Administrators". Even "Users" will have proper privilege for the profile folder.
5. Log off and log back in by the new user and see if you still have the problem. If the PC is domain PC, select local PC when you login. The user account you created is valid only for your local, not for domain. If you are network administrator, you can create domain account. If your PC is standalone, just login.

<Shortcut if you know about PC>
The root problem is that some program on your PC, or your operation will change the privilege of your user profile. The location is, typically "C:\Documents and Settings\[your login name]" and especially, a folder underneath [your login name], "Application Data" needs "Full Control".

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

I had the very same problem, and received that annoying message saying that there is a problem because of the VBA and the stupid question that asks if you have run low in HD space.  This is what I did.
Apparently, there is a problem with the VBA files.  A friend of mine make me this suggestion, and it worked, though it may be a far more big problem for some of you.
*Don`t do this unless it is absolutely critical for you to be able to run SW*
1.Reinstall Windows XP (hahaha!  I'm crazy)
2.Install Office 2000 (the version before Office XP)
3.Install SolidWorks.  It should run by now.
4.Install the Office XP as an upgrade.
If you ask me, I don't really know how this works, but if your computer has not been tweaked or has tons of erratic files and/or programs that you don't what to have to reinstall, don't do this.  Hope this works at least for somebody.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

I believe the VBA files are fine. Try to run macro with Word or Excel and I bet they work. Only when you run macro from SW, you get the error.

Apparently, SW macro needs to have a right privilege to "C:\Documents and Settings\[your login name]\Application Data", but somehow, the permission is changed. Then, you get the error.

You didn't have to re-install OS, but only create a new login account. If you re-install, you re-create a new login account anyway and the problem is fixed.

As I posted earlier, this is getting into an area that you don't have to deal with typically. So, just try to create a new login account as I instructed last time and see if the problem is fixed.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

I created a new login acount and then I reinstalled SW2003 but the problem was not solved.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

pabasam,

I am sorry to hear that it still doesn't work, but a question for you. Have you ever successfully executed a macro from SW without having the error, "Failed to initialize Visual Basic for Apps, equations and macros will not work"? If not, my suggested way won't help.

I got a macro for multiple printing and the macro was trying to create an initial file under "C:\", but I didn't have a permission. So IT manipulated my privilege and since then, all macros from SW stooped working and kept getting the error message. I tried to run a macro from Excel and it worked. Another strange thing happening was I couldn't delete a file I created on Desktop. This is why I started looking permission of my user profile.

As I described before, my permission for "Application Data" was gone and since IT gave me full permission to my user profile becasue of the trouble, I could add "Full Control" to the folder and the problem was gone. I couldn't believe and I took the permission away to made sure if that was the cause. Sure, I got the error message. I am not still sure how my permission to the folder was gone, but I didn't have to re-install SW at all.

I bet there are some other causes for this problem, but I am suggesting to check the permission for "Application Data" based on my experience, especially the error message was same.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

To all people that have this problem:
the solution is quiet easy, search "Mso9intl.dll" on your Solidworks CDs, and copy this file into your Solidworks installation folder. That's it!!!

I just used this way to solve this problem this morning.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

scott1971ca,

I don't have the problem any more, but I am just curios.

"Mso9intl.dll" is not in my SolidWorks folder, but in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\1033". It's "Microsoft Office 2000 component", file version 9.0.0.2720.

I don't have SolidWorks CD because IT controls all PCs and softwares here at my work, so I can't confirm if the DLL is on SolidWorks CD. Wasn't it on MS Office CD? How did you decide to try it?

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

LoveAeris,

You are right, basically, this file is a DLL file for MS Office program.

I am runing Windows2000, MS OfficeXP and Solidworks 2004 on my computer. But before I copied this file from Solidworks CD, I could not find this file on my computer.

Last night, I installed, uninstalled and reinsatlled so many times, but the problem was still there. This morning, I runned a monitor program, "Filemon", that is a powerful tool for seeing how applications use the files and DLLs. So, after I read the log file, I found before the problem happens, the last file that Solidworks searched is "Mso9intl.dll". This is my reason.

I think you can find this file on MS Office CD.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

scott1971ca

"the solution is quiet easy, search "Mso9intl.dll" on your Solidworks CDs, and copy this file into your Solidworks installation folder. That's it!!!"

Could you be more specific about the "installation folder?"
Could you specify the folder directory? i.e. (C:\Program Files\SolidWorks) ??

Thank you very much,

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

You dont need to actually write macros to test the VBA, any equation entered in the Equation manager will run VBA to execute.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

007bond

The "installation folder" is the floder in which you intall the SolidWorks.

for example, the default floder for insatlling SolidWorks is "C:\Program Files\SolidWorks", so, you just copy the file "Mso9intl.dll" into "C:\Program Files\SolidWorks".

If you cannot find "Mso9intl.dll" in Solidworks CD, you can try to find it on Microsoft Office CD.

RE: sw 2003 installation problem

I had the same problem with sw2004 so I did what Scott1971ca said and it's solved!
