I've been given the task of creating a scalable model of a complete cooling system (unfortunately to be made in Excel). Basically it will consist of a main cooling loop, that in parallell at various points interacts via Hx's to aquire the heat from various subsystems. It is thought that a future user should be able to specify e.g. temperature constraints,heat input from the subsystem, type of fluid in pipe and in shell, and then the Hx will be scaled accordingly.

However, I have no background in this subject, and I seem to be unable to find a way to provide an estimate (or calculation) of the h2, heat transfer coefficient on the shell side of the Hx. In contrast to the h1, I believe the h2 would be very much dependent on the Hx design. I would be very grateful for any tips, or if anyone can refer me to some literature on this topic, ideally of course on how to calculate a value for h2, or data on what typical h2 values could be for various fluids.

Get hold of a copy of Process Heat Transfer by DQ Kern.  It has correlations in here for both tube side and shell side coefficients, as well as LMTD correction factors for exchanger types.
