Practices for Dimensioning Complex Aesthetic Surfaces?

Practices for Dimensioning Complex Aesthetic Surfaces?

Practices for Dimensioning Complex Aesthetic Surfaces?

(OP)
Does anyone have any information on good online references, standards, or books that describe how to properly dimension/specify complex surfaces for manufacturing?

Tolerances on the surfaces are important but I can't figure a way to convey the appropriate information?

Is the solid model complete with multiple toleranced profiles sufficient?

RE: Practices for Dimensioning Complex Aesthetic Surfaces?

sirmick,

Check out ASME Y14.5M-1994.  It shows you how to apply dimensions and tolerances to curved surfaces.  It IS the standard.

In SolidWorks, you would apply a bunch of points, make these coincident to the curved line, and apply dimensions to them.  Rather than trying to apply tolerances to your dimensions, you would apply a profile tolerance to the surface.
