I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

(OP)
I'm searching for these books:

- FREQUENCY SYNTHESIZER DESIGN HANDBOOK by James A. CRAWFORD edited by Artech House
- FREQUENCY SYNTHESIZERS: THEORY AND DESIGN by Vadin MANASSEWITSCH edited by Wiley

or ebooks and files on:

Hybrid Frequency Synthesis using Phase Locked Loops (PLL)

Has someone these?
Thanks. Bye.

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

I have the one by MANASSEWITSCH.  So, what do you want to know?

Hi! I want to know if MANASSEWITSCH writes about Hybrid Frequency Synthesizers using offset refernce PLL and multiple loop PLL and how to design them (system and his blocks). Many thanks to you. Bye

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

Without your defining what you mean by "Hybrid" I don't know the answer.  But for the rest of your question, the answer is yes.
This is the best book I have ever found, and it has many configurations which I have never seen in realization nor in other textbooks.  If it isn't covered in this book, you probably don't really need to know.
I hope that helps you.  The book is very definitely worth the price I paid for it.

With "hybrid" I means using a mix of PLL and DDS. Do you know something about the one by CRAWFORD? Many thanks for the help, probably I will buy the MANASSEWITSCH. Bye.

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

Why would you try to mix a PLL with a DDS?  That makes no sense to me.  The PLL would degrade the accuracy of the DDS.

I have not looked at the Crawford book.  So, I can't comment on it.

The DDS over 1GHz have a high DC consumption(~500mA) so in a offset reference PLL I can use a DDS like offset reference at lower frequency (lower consumption) and PLL to work at higher frequencies having so low DC consumption.
BYE

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

Why wouldn't you just run the DDS at a lower frequency anyway and upconvert the output to the desired frequency?  That is what is done in a lot of microwave equipment.

Because I need a wideband(200MHz) at high frequency(1100GHz) and fine channel spacing with fast switching (~10usec) for a real-time moisture measuring system. However this is only an idea because the measuring system is under development and the design specifications aren't well known. Bye

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

Well, I can easily build a 0-500MHz DDS, upconvert it to 1.1GHz and there you go.  I don't think you really meant 1100GHz did you?  And if you are only measuring moisture why do you need such fast switching speed?
The fine channel spacing of the DDS is a function of the design.  You can make it as fine as you think you have dollars for.

The customer wish a low cost system using devices already available in warehouse and the fast switching speed is needed to do realtime measures. Sure, I will evaluate others solutions included the yours. Bye

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

Well, moisture content can't change in 10uS, unless you are talking about an extremely small area, so I don't see the practicality of this requirement.

No stable variable oscillator in the frequency range you are talking about is low cost.

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

Sure, I think that 100uSec are sufficents but the measuring system will be genaral purpose and it will can be able to measures moisture in small areas of anisotropic materials. Unfortunately the customer doesn't have a clear idea on what he wants.

To avoid high frequency oscillators I will use a low freq oscillator like reference for a PLL.

RE: I'm searching for books on frequency synthesizers design

If you want reasonably fast speed, low cost, reasonably low power consumption and spectral purity isn't too much of an issue, just take a low-frequency DDS output, filter it, and use a PLL (e.g., National Semiconductor's Platinum series is super)as a frequency multiplier to get you up to 1100 MHz. Spurious and noise get increased 20Log(N) with this route, but from what you describe, hard to believe that extreme spectral purity is needed.

Thanks a lot! Bye
