Need some info on a simple timer..............

Need some info on a simple timer..............

Need some info on a simple timer..............

(OP)
I am looking for an easy circuit to build to monitor a CubKar race. The Cubs (Boy Scouts) build a small car out of wood (8"x2"). The cars are raced, four at a time, down a track that starts off with a 4 foot sloped section and then a long flat sections. A level is used to release all four car at once and the first one to reach the end of the track wins. I know the circuit should be simple but I am a little rusty at my electronics. I through a simple LED sensors that can detect frist ,second or third car to past the finish line. Indicating the them by setting of lights in different flashing order. I like to use this to teach the cubs a bit about electronics at the same time.

So if you help it would be greatly appreciate.

RE: Need some info on a simple timer..............

Suggestion:
Probably, the best approach will be over optical sensors.  Is there any budgetary constraint?

As with everything were trying to keep it to a minimum, hopefully less than $100. Also in the main message, the cars are released with a lever and not a level.

and type "optical sensor" under Product / Service, which will return Sensors: Optical aligned with 142 Companies among other choices. Vision sensors could be considered. This way you can find "best possible" deal.
