Hello,
 In ASME Section VIII Div. I, UG-101(o)(displacement proof test), it says that the test can only be performed on materials with a definite yield point.  My question is, does stainless steel(316L), fall into this category?  If so(or not), is there a place in Code or elsewhere that would tell me what materials can be used for this test?  Or a list of materials that have a definite yield point?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You must have the MTR for the material used to do your proof test with. Then, in UG-101 formula, P1=(B/4)SìÅ/Sìr, use Sì= min. specified tensile(70ksi for 316L), and Sìr=Actual tensile, from MTR.

Thanks for your reply.  I was using the specified minimum stress and max from the Code specs, which the material has to meet as a min.  To me this means that I'm using worst case stress values.  But that doesn't address the yield point issue.  Is there anywhere that gives what materials are acceptable?  Or is it assumed that as long as a max yield is given that the material is acceptable?
