What is the different between HC164 and HC165.  I read their datasheet and I can't find any difference at all.  Please help!

I had the same question . I am working on BCD-7 segment display and want to use one of these for the shift register.

The 164 is serial in/parallel out
The 165 is parallel in/serial out

Presumably, you'd want a 164
