FLOOR JOIST SUPPORT FOR LOAD BEARING WALL REMOVAL

FLOOR JOIST SUPPORT FOR LOAD BEARING WALL REMOVAL

FLOOR JOIST SUPPORT FOR LOAD BEARING WALL REMOVAL

(OP)
I have a span of 18 feet that I need to put a wood beam or LVL beam TO REMOVE A LOAD BEARING WALL. It can be no higher than 12" but as wide as needed.  There will be a second story on top of this floor. Can someone please offer your engineering experiance and recommend what beam would be appropriate under this circumstance. house dimensions are 31'X 38' I sure would appreciate your help on this one. I did pay and consult with a structural engineer, but would like a second opinion.

RE: FLOOR JOIST SUPPORT FOR LOAD BEARING WALL REMOVAL

How much did you pay the consultant?

You're limited to a 12" beam depth and somewhat unlimited width; you've specificed no particular loadings (what's on the second story? what kind of building is this? etc.?) so go with a conceptual "worst case"... Got it: use a steel beam, like a W12X16, it'll be plenty strong.

What is the tributary area and use of the building?
Where are you located?
What code are you working with?

I sure do thank you fellows for your help and consideration. I do not feel comfortable with the strucural engineer that I consulted with. I just want to make sure that this beam is plenty to support my floor and addition. the second story above the beam will be mainly bedrooms. there will be one bathroom, but not directly over the beam. I live in Baltimore, Maryland (Balto County) The engineer I consulted with told me I can use 4 2x12 sandwiched (two on each side) of a 1/2 inch thick x 12 inch W steel flatbar bolted together with a staggered bolt pattern. Any help you guys can offer me will be greatly appreciated. Thank You......Tony

RE: FLOOR JOIST SUPPORT FOR LOAD BEARING WALL REMOVAL

How much did he say the flitch plate beam will cost? It'll work, but might be very expensive. If the beam will be exposed, though, flitch plate beams, if they're constructed properly, can be works of art.
