Recommended hardware (Input) for SW?

Recommended hardware (Input) for SW?

(OP)
Hi

I am a new SW user and are considering which hardware to fit in my system. I have followed the discussions about input devices with great interest, it seems there is the Space....-devices for the left hand and then I read about a new device called Dimentor or Inspector, I am not sure, that is operated with the right hand? The last seems most attractive, since I would want to use my keyboard also...

Have anybody got more information or comments on these devices?

Thank you.

M. Umm

RE: Recommended hardware (Input) for SW?

That about covers it as far as I can see.  People a combinations of the left-handed "space mouse" and the traditional right-handed input devices.

Variances come in the shape and style of the left-handed devices, as well as the right-handed ones.  Some LH devices use a ball, others I've seen use a knob-like feature.  Some people find the MS Strategic Commander (game controler) to be just as effective as the more CAD-oriented space mouse.

RH devices cover the normal range of mouse and trackballs in all their shapes and colors.  I prefer the Logitec Optical Marble Mouse.

I've come across some threads where people are investigating the use of voice command to allow entering dimensions, but I'm not sure how far that has come.

"The attempt and not the deed confounds us."

RE: Recommended hardware (Input) for SW?

I have a SpaceBall (which I won at the first SW World conference ).  It works great(still). The only issue I have with these "other hand" devices is the interaction with graphics/system speed. Since they rotate/zoom, etc. in "real-time" as soon as you activate the device, you need to learn to rest your hand but not exert any pressure unless you really want to.  If you do not have a fast system and have large files active, it can be very frustrating waiting for the constant graphics updates. This can still be an issue, even with fairly fast graphics if you try to mouse-click at the same time - you could get some odd delayed action affects that take some getting used to.  Granted things have improved dramatically in speed, both hardware and software over the last few years, but just be aware of the issue.  I would test drive one on YOUR OWN SYSTEM before investing money (generally speaking they ain't cheap).  If it works well you will love it.
