Flow meter discharging to relief valve pipe

Flow meter discharging to relief valve pipe

Flow meter discharging to relief valve pipe

(OP)
A contractor is offering us a 1500gpm@125psi fire pump (centrifugal-horizontal) with the relief valve discharging to the water supply tank and a flow meter that discharges also to the supply tank using the same discharge line of the relief valve.

The relief valve discharge pipe is 8" (the flow meter pipe is also 8" and joins the other with a 8x8 tee).

Is this OK? Is it OK with NFPA 20? Any comment on this will be appreciated.

RE: Flow meter discharging to relief valve pipe

As long as you have the appropriate lenghts of pipe on the suction and discharge side of the pump to avoid turbulent flow the flow meter and discharge can be returned to the suction tank.

RE: Flow meter discharging to relief valve pipe

It is not ideal to have your test line piped into your relief line,NFPA 20 gives line sizes for relief lines and for test lines as per there rating (1000 GPM,1500GPM etc...)but no mention of combined lines!Keep them separate they are both there for very different functions which you no doubt know!!
