know any good Masonry Design books ??

know any good Masonry Design books ??

know any good Masonry Design books ??

(OP)
I am a structural Engineer from Europe (new Euro code many symbols!!).
I now work in the US. Designing in metric and converting to English units is not worth the hassle, because of all the design variables, and symbols.
Can anyone reccomend a good masonry/CMU design book. One preferably that deals with shear walls, and lateral design. One with good examples?
Thanks

RE: know any good Masonry Design books ??

The reference book I have seen most engineers use for many years is "Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook" by James E. Amrhein, published by Masonry Institute of America.

Another good one is "1997 Design of Reinforced Masonry Structures" by Gregg E. Brandow, Gary C. Hart and Ajit Virdee, published by Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada.

Be careful, the Amrhein edition we have (fifth) has lots of errata.

For an excellent design reference, there is a text titled, "Engineered Masonry Design" by Glanville and Hatzinikolas; strictly a limit states design text for masonry in SI units.  It also has a copy of the current Code for Masonry Design (Canadian) bound into the text.

The American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE has an upcoming seminar on masrony design in Minneapolis, MN in April.  It will be held in other cities around the US but, you will have to check with ASCE for dates, times and places.

I think the most comprehensive text is "Masonry Structures, Behavior and Design" by Drysdale, Hamid, and Baker.

ISBN 1-929081-01-4

Try the Masonry Designers' Guide, jointly produced by the Masonry Society and ACI.  It is based on ACI 530 and ACI 531.  It is written primarily for design professionals, not students, and has illustrated design applications.  That is, it walks you through analysis and design of several masonry buildings from beginning to end, often comparing potential systems (say multi-wythe brick wall vs. reinf CMU, etc.).  I have found it to be a valuable resource full of "real world" design examples.  Here is a link to check it out: http://www.masonrysociety.org/Publications/MDG3.htm

Design of Reinforced Masonry Structures by Narendra Taly

It's put out by ICBO.  Good lateral examples.

I have used the reference mentioned by Taro above and have also found the following helpful...

Reinforced Masonry by Schnieder and Dickey.
