Could someone guide me how to choose a slurry pump? I do not have the specific information right now. I need general selection procedure. I appreciate any information.

RE: Could someone guide me how to choos

First, determine the weight % of solids and the solid particles' characteristic size. Then you must decide whether the pump is to be used for short or long runs, low or high capacities. A tradeoff of pressure drop and solids loadings is one important criterion. Pressure drops are not so simple to estimate because slurries may behave as non-newtonian fluids in different flow regimes.

For a start I can recommend the book by Donald R. Woods "Process design and engineering practice" published by Prentice Hall, chapter 2.

Contact Warman International or Georgia Iron . The latter has a number of technical papers on their website.

things to bear in mind.

Dont oversize the pump as this can cause as many problems as undersizing.

Select a larger motor if you want some security in design.

Pay attention to the seals. See www.mcnallyinstitute.com for details on sealing for slurries.

Avoid impeller tip speeds > 25m/s otherwise you will get extreme wear

A slow running large pump will be better in the long run than a small high speed pump.

If you can afford it buy the book by Wilson, Addie and Clift centrifugal Pumps for Slurry Service or subscribe to BHRA conference papers.

If the head required is such that you need to series the pumps you may want to consider support from a manufacture or consultant.  Series slurry pumps work fine, but can be a design nightmare!

Good Luck
