Mech Properties of 3M S-2 Glass/1003 Tape

Mech Properties of 3M S-2 Glass/1003 Tape

Mech Properties of 3M S-2 Glass/1003 Tape

(OP)
Does anyone have the properties of this tape.  In particular, I need the compressive strength, 0 and 90 degree.

RE: Mech Properties of 3M S-2 Glass/1003 Tape

In what kind of application do you use this tape?

RE: Mech Properties of 3M S-2 Glass/1003 Tape

(OP)
The application is the floor of an aircraft.  The floor is a sandwich construction, laminiates above/below a core.  I have two property reports on the tape, but my NASTRAN run indicates compressive stress in interior plys in the 90 degree (matrix) direction near holes.  So I am concerned about failure in matrix direction in compression.  But I can't find any test data for that strength value.  But the tape is a category 5 material and (I believe) that means the material is in general use and the properties are well established.  I have modulus and strength in 0 deg (compression and tension) and in 90 deg (only tension), and am missing strength in 90 degree compression.

Currently, my margin of safety for compression 90 degree failure mode is based on scaling the compression strength of a S-2 bidirectional fabric.  But I recognize that the 90 degree compression strength of a uni-directional tape is not similar to a bi-direction weave.  But I don't have another number to use.

I'm not very familiar with composite materials, but since it is a cat V material I'm supprised that I can't find the properties somewhere.

You can get this data by going to www.agy.com

Contact 3M directly, they are really good about releasing this information if you are using it for design purposes.  I've done this in the past for composite floor board repair designs.  Using another manufacturers data in composites, although it will give you an idea of the strength, isn't best practice because they use different processes in making their product.  Also because this is composites, don't rely solely on the data, test the materials to verify your calcualted and the manufacturers results.  This is essential from the certification aspect.

Be aware that 3M sold its composite business to Cytec over a year ago. All the production facilities have moved to new locations and different equipment.
