Slurry Flow Meter

Slurry Flow Meter

Slurry Flow Meter

(OP)
Hi,
I am currently using a doppler style meter to measure the flow of a zinc concentrate/water slurry to an autoclave. The slurry varies between 65% - 75% solids and the average flow is approx. 200 litres/min. We use Toyo style pumps so the flow does pulsate. The pressure is approx.200 psi, and the line size is 3". I am wondering if a different type of meter, mag for instance, would give us a more accurate measurement.

Thanks...Tim

RE: Slurry Flow Meter

Are you trying to get a more accurate instantaneous flow reading (so you can better see the pulsation?) or totalize how much has been transferred over a period of time?

Just a thought, but since I assume you're using a positive displacement type pump, is there any way for you to use the strokes on the pump to get a more accurate reading?

RE: Slurry Flow Meter

200 l/min in a 3" line is pretty low velocity. Sure, magmeters will work even a low velocity as long as the electrode materials are compatible with the slurry and you can always adjust the signal dampening.

The sonic meter shoulh give you good readings, too,  but you may be having problems with the flow profile. Slurries take a lot of pipe run before the flow profile stabilizes or becomes fully developed (especiall so at low velocity).

What sort of upstream run do you have? and how "viscous" is the slurry.

RE: Slurry Flow Meter

Since its only 3" a corriolis flow meter could be used. It measures both mass flow and desity.

Check fisher-rosemount.
