Sect I vs Sect VIII, Div. 1 application

Sect I vs Sect VIII, Div. 1 application

Sect I vs Sect VIII, Div. 1 application

(OP)
Hi all,

I have used Sect VIII, Div. 1 and 2 for several years but I have never had to do any work that requires Sect I.
So I just wonder exactly for what kind of application or equipment must use Sect I.  What is the definition of a "fired" vessel?

I know that vessels with a fire tube can be designed and registered with Sect VIII.  This would be a free water knock out drum (which has a fire tube to heat up the oil for water separation). I think a steam boiler has to use Sect I.   Is this about right?  Any good clarification is appreciated.

Thanks.

SecI see PG-2,SecVIII see U-1

RE: Sect I vs Sect VIII, Div. 1 application

ASME sect I is to be used for:
a) Power boilers- a boiler in which steam or vapor is generated at a pressure of more than 15 psi for use external to itself
b)electric boiler- a power boiler or a high temperature water boiler in which the source of heat is electricity
c)minature boiler -see limits in PMB-2
d)high temperature water boiler- a waer boiler intended for operation at pressures in excess of 160 psi and/or temperaures in excess of 250F

This includes organic fluid vaporizers as well.

Unfired, waste heat  boilers may be designed by either section I or VIII, but section I is less stringent.
