Galling between Aluminum 319 and 356

Galling between Aluminum 319 and 356

Galling between Aluminum 319 and 356

(OP)
Hello

I've recently switched my contacting materials to Aluminum 356 rotating on aluminum 319. I've experienced a galling problem. I was wondering if anyone knows if this could be due to the similarities of the two metals

My old system had Aluminum 850 rotating on Aluminum 356 and no problems occured.

Thanks

RE: Galling between Aluminum 319 and 356

Aluminum alloy 850.0 (6% Sn, 1% Cu, 1 % Ni) is used in applications where excellent bearing qualities are required.  Changing from this alloy to any other aluminum alloy will result in significantly more galling.

Is there a general rule for chosing contacting aluminum alloys to advoid adhesion/galling?

RE: Galling between Aluminum 319 and 356

There are no general rules of which I am aware.  Bearing-type alloys will contain elements like tin, lead, etc., so these are the recommended alloys for minimizing/eliminating galling.  I suggest you familiarize yourself with this subject by reviewing some references:
