IS ULTIMET A HIGH $ ALLOY?

IS ULTIMET A HIGH $ ALLOY?

IS ULTIMET A HIGH $ ALLOY?

(OP)
Looking at trying some Haynes ULTIMET cobalt alloy in wet phos acid production.  This would be to replace Ferralium 255 (S32550).  How does the cost of ULTIMET compare to other alloys, such as 316SS or 2205 (S32205 or S31803)?  Are fabrication costs much different?  Supposedly it doesn't gall as much as the high nickel alloys.

The UNS number for ULTIMET is R31233; it's composition is a nominal 53Co-26Cr-9Ni-3Fe-5Mo-2W.

RE: IS ULTIMET A HIGH $ ALLOY?

Sorry that I can't be more specific, but the Ultimet alloy is going to be significantly more expensive than the stainless steel alloys 316 or 2205.  I don't have any experience with the cost of Feralium 255.  Cobalt + high performance through alloying (lots of Cr, Ni, W, etc.) = high $'s.  Haynes is an excellent company, so I highly recommend working with them to get your application as refined as possible, in order to minimize the cost increase.  Please reply with any information you get, as it would be useful to see what the difference will be.

RE: IS ULTIMET A HIGH $ ALLOY?

Ive been requesting qutoes for various nickel and cobalt based alloys, mostly I've been told that unless its a common grade $/lbs prices can vary widely but that generally:

Nickel based common grade (Hastelloy X) $40-50

Cobalt based (haynes 188) $60-80

Most have large weight minimum orders due to rarity.

good luck.
