Cones w/ Half-angles >30 deg.

Cones w/ Half-angles >30 deg.

Cones w/ Half-angles >30 deg.

(OP)
In Section VIII, Div. 1, what formula(s) do you use to calculate the required thickness for a concentric cone with a half-angle > 30 degrees?

Thanks!

-Christine

RE: Cones w/ Half-angles >30 deg.

Refer to your Code book, UG-33-(f)-(2) and it will
refer you to the formulas in UG-34 (ref. 1995 ASME
Sec 8 Div 1 Code Book).

RE: Cones w/ Half-angles >30 deg.

The formula is the same as for α<30 deg (UG-32(g)(4)). In addition you need to check the end reinforcement per 1-5(d), or the thickness of the knuckle, if there is one (or two).

RE: Cones w/ Half-angles >30 deg.

Sounds like your are new to the Code.
Suggestions:
1.Remember anything you get off of this site is only an opinion.
2.Use current Code Books.
3.Look at the courses offered by ASME and National Board.
4.Run all questions and rough drafts past your AI. He/she
should help or will find someone who can.
5.Learn from your problems.
6.When looking something up in the Code, read the entire paragraph.
7.Have fun.

RE: Cones w/ Half-angles >30 deg.

Perhaps I've misunderstood the question...but isn't UG-34 for external pressure???  When 1/2-apex angle is greater than 30 degrees, I've always referred to Appendix 1-5 for internal pressure per UG-32(g)(h).
