SolidWorks freezes at random
SolidWorks freezes at random
(OP)
Hi.
I'm running a dedicated license of SolidWorks 2003 on my computer, and I have found that the application will stop responding at random times. The mouse will move, and other applications will be just fine, but SolidWorks simply stops responding. Typically, I will have to try and close the window, at which point the "Application is not responding" window pops up and I click "End Task" and re-launch SolidWorks to start again.
I've had someone to a complete uninstall/re-install of the software, but the problem still persists.
Can anyone offer some suggestions as to how I can fix this?
Thanks in advance,
Keith

What OS are you running?
How much RAM you running?
What video card do you have?
Is the part that you are opening is it very complex, or is it a complex assembly?

Thanks for responding. Here are the answers to your questions:
1. I'm assuming "AV" means "Anti-Virus," and if so, the answer is yes.
2. I'm running Windows 2000 Professional.
3. I'm running 256 MB of RAM.
4. The video card is NVIDIA GeForce 256AGP (Dell).
5. The parts are not complex at all. They are quite simple. I've had it happen on an assembly as well, but the assembly is not what I would consider complex.

Also check out your Virtual Memory. The rule is 3-4 times the amount of RAM, 3 for min, 4 for max. Some people set it to 4 times the RAM and thats set for both min & max.
I think your biggest problem is the fact you installed with the AV running. Try uninstalling & reinstalling using FAQ559-488. If your AV is running from a server when you restart your machine. Simply unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of you computer before you install SW.
If you do reinstall it and it doesn't work, at least we can rule out this varaible, and look at something else for the problem.
I hope this helps,

I run a similar system with an Oxygen (3DLabs) card and have good stability, although I did need to bump my RAM up to 768 MB for more complex parts/renderings/assemblies. How does your card rate on the SolidWorks web site regarding approved cards?

It sounds like the problem is your graphics card. The GeForce family is not a great card for solid modeling. I used to use a 64meg Geforce2 and experienced similar issues. If you want to stay with Nvidia, move to the Quadro series. The SW website lists all the cards that have been tested. Only buy one that has passed. From my experience, "passed with limitations" is no better than "failed".
