Floor Josist span

Floor Josist span

Floor Josist span

(OP)
I need to know if eastern white pine
3x12(actual)will span 22' on 22"o.c.
1x6 t&g flooring will be applied on top.
The space will be used for sleeping, as many
as 10 beds. no ceiling applied on bottom
Length of building is 30'. all that i can find
is values for dimension lumber.

Thanks, Michael

RE: Floor Josist span

Assuming you have No. 1 Eastern White pine with an allowable bending stress of 750 psi you are over stressed at 22 ft and 22in o.c.  This is based on 40 psf UBC required live floor loads.  You exceed both allowable stress and L/360 deflection.   If you put your joists at 18" o.c. you meet the allowable stress and deflection for the same wood.

good luck

RE: Floor Josist span

I have a span of 18 feet that I need to put a wood beam or LVL beam in for floor joist support. It can be no higher than 12" but as wide as needed.  There will be a second story on top of this floor. Can someone please offer your engineering experiance and recommend what beam would be appropriate under this circumstance. house dimensions are 31'X 38' I sure would appreciate your help on this one. I did pay and consult with a structural engineer, but would like a second opinion.
