IGBT Inverters and Regenerative Units for renewable energy

IGBT Inverters and Regenerative Units for renewable energy

(OP)
Hello
I would like to know the forums opinions of IGBT regenerative drive systems.  I am  specifying the electrical systems for a wave energy plant in Australia.  From various procurement investigations the most cost effective generator option is an induction machine coupled to a inverter/regenerative IGBT drive.  This will operate around 315kW.

The problem that I have is that I have no proof that these systems can operate wholly in generator mode when the input power fluctuates.  The turbine attached to the wave-station will produce a stochastic torque variation which will be smoothed somewhat by the inertia of the rotating components.

The drive system is quite a new system developed by Rockwell but it has not been specifically for generation.

Does anybody have experience of these systems in a regenerative application in this kind of power range.  I would be pleased to hear from you

Regards

You can try to adapt regenerative industrial drives (with IGBTs on the load and on the line side.

But you also should conider that there are several special enviromental conditions to be considered in your application (e.g. corrosion due to salt)

There are some companies supplying converters for an  application having lots in common with yours:
