Pole Buildings (Post Frame Bldg Design)

Pole Buildings (Post Frame Bldg Design)

Does anyone know of a good book for doing structural calcs for pole buildings?  I have the National Frame Builders Assoc. Design Manual but it discourages the use of knee braces and does not cover other types of reiforcement very well.  I also have the DAFI program available from their web site.  Some of the buildings I have been asked to design cannot be justified by calculations without using some form of bracing.  I had to bow out of one project because it was in a high wind area and had a very large sail area.

RE: Pole Buildings (Post Frame Bldg Design)

The Timber Construction Manual (http://www.aitc-glulam.org/) has some examples (with and without knee braces) and gives as a reference the ellusive (since I haven't bought it yet) American Society of Agricultural Engineers' EP 486 "Post and Pole Foundation Design" and Pole Building Design from the American Wood Preservers Institute. Hmmm...

I just surfed over to http://www.asae.org/, arg, $51! Not today...

Post-Frame Building Design
Provides a concise summary of post-frame design. Learn how the development of pressure treated materials and lightweight metal sheeting have allowed post-frame building to develop into a viable multi-purpose structural system. 332 pages, 1992, 6 x 9 inches, hardbound. ISBN: 0-929355-29-6. Order No. M1092 Member $44.00 List $51.50

I know that the Canadian Wood Design Manual has some good info on pole buildings, too.

Thanks Dave,

Looks like some good and previously unk to me resources.

The best article I ever found on engineering pole buildings  is entitled "Building Code Requirements for Pole Type Buildings" by Jerry J. Barbera, PE.  It was to be presented at the International Conference on Timber Engineering September 22, 1988.  This goes through step by step in designing pole buildings.

RE: Pole Buildings (Post Frame Bldg Design)

Here are more good articles and books on Pole Buildings and Timber Framing

"How to Design Pole Type Buildings" by Donald Patterson, SE available through American Wood Preservers Institute

"Post-Frame Building Design, ASAE Monograph Number ll" published by American Association of Agricultural Engineers

The Timber Framers Guild has a book on Engineering Timber Frame Structures available through their web site at  www.tfguild.org

Try www.postframe.org to find the free DAFI download.

Maybe it would be good to have a public folder to post item like this too?

RE: Pole Buildings (Post Frame Bldg Design)

If someone knows of a place where this can be posted I would be more than happy to give it to them.  I am sure that before posting on a public forum you would need to get the permission of the author. Last I knew Jerry Barbera lives down in Oregon.
