CAN ANYBODY EXPLAIN THE REAL STATUS OF THE DEVELOPMENT/AVAILABILITY OF ULTRASONIC MOTORSS.WILL IT REALLY REPLACE THE PERMANENT MAGNET MOTORS IN FUTURE.WOULD LIKE TO GET SOME GOOD INFO ON SUCH MOTORS

RE: ULTRASONIC MOTORS KNOWLEDGE BASE

There are lots of people working on them and some commercial availability.

They'll replace some PM applications and create some new applications, but I don't think that a piezo motor, with it's somewhat complex drive requirements will ever replace a simple brushed motor that only requires a DC voltage.

RE: ULTRASONIC MOTORS KNOWLEDGE BASE

An interesting application that didn't exist for regular PM motors:

Airplanes lose tires due to the sudden and abrasive startup of rolling motion upon touchdown.  Piezomotors are being developed for spinning up the wheels prior to touchdown and then, removal of the travelling wave makes the motor behave like a disc brake.

Voila, a motor and disc brake in a single package.
