API618 Recip compressor Piston vent hole question.

API618 Recip compressor Piston vent hole question.

API618 Recip compressor Piston vent hole question.

(OP)
Hi all,

In our refinery we have a issue with an recip compressor where there is a mark on a liner at the cylinder.
OEM said possible cause is from vent hole at the piston ring groove because the jet pressure from this hole would make such mark.
and for this issue, OEM told us to make another vent hole as API suggested.

6.10.3.1 Hollow pistons (single piece or multi-piece) shall be continuously self-venting; i.e., they shall depressure when the
cylinder is depressured. Acceptable methods of venting include a hole located in the head-end face of the piston in the form of a
single hole 3 mm (1/8 in.) in diameter, a hole at the bottom of the piston ring groove, or a spring-loaded relief plug in the outer-end
face of the piston.

1) I was trying to find the reason why such hole size is limited to 3mm diameter, because there are many various size of piston and I thought the size should vary by piston size, but could not find one.

2) Also, the locations are set as above but wouln't location 'head-end face of the piston' act as a clearance and affect the performance of compressor?

Thanks
