42 inches ring

42 inches ring

42 inches ring

(OP)
I am working on a piping installation project,we have a 42 inches class 900 ,RTJ flange provided from stock material with no ring,we searched for related ring from other resources and found different ones with same descriptions but non of them does not match within ring seat,At first how could it be possible the rings are not match with flanges with proper descriptions and now Are we allowed to shave or machine ring seat on flange face or machining ring individually?
(42 inches flangee sre in serie A type)

RE: 42 inches ring

Have you checked to which design the flange is made? Is it a B16.47 'standard' RTJ flange, or is it custom engineered & made? The latter could be a reason for a non-standard ring.

RE: 42 inches ring

(OP)
Flanges followed B16.47 standard but I didn’t find any punches on rings,Do you have any experiences on shaving or machining ring or flange in mentioned situation?

RE: 42 inches ring

No

Dear Xl83NL
As you said I cheched out the point in ASME B16.47 and found out after 36inches there is no dimension for seat ,up to 36 inches RTJ flange we have all dimensions for seat geometry then proper Standard recommendations are not applicable in this case,I think after 36 these dimensions are all in manufactures hand,if you get else from standard please let me know

RE: 42 inches ring

amir35,

Indeed you are correct.

Both B16.47 and MSS-SP-44 both state that ring type joints beyond class 900 36 inch "are not contemplated".

At this sort of size and pressure you can't go round "shaving" or modifying the flange.

I suggest you regard your current flange as scrap metal and go and order a pair of flanges and rings designed as one complete unit.

Why not ask a gasket manufacturer like Klinger what they would do?

RE: 42 inches ring

What type of ring do you want - octagonal? Material of construction ? Tell us a bit more about the ring required, and maybe there is some one reading this thread who may help source..

RE: 42 inches ring

(OP)
The type is octagonal and used for sweet gas service,we severely in lack of time and almost at the end of project we have found the ring and flange are not matched, there is no time for new order and we should do plan B,what is plan B?filling the ring seat and machining for existing ring or withdrawing flange connection and employing welded type joint.

RE: 42 inches ring

Well that's up to you. If you can get absolute dimensions of the groove I would have thought a gasket manufacturer would run off a couple of specials for you.

Otherwise delete the flanges and weld it.

Messing about with a 42" class 900 flange is not a recommended option IMHO.

whatever you do, sit down and think it through and document why you're doing it.

doing things in a big rush to finish on time is often the root cause of failure.

RE: 42 inches ring

Suggest posting your email address in this thread. Dont know if US sanctions on Iran include a ban on the supply of RTJ rings.
