Hi,
I would like to know whether we need to provide grid mat design for power plant as per IEEE665, unlike the onw we follow gird mat design for substation as per IEEE80. I am bit confused whether providing ground ring conductor around the equipment package(such as GT, STG)and other building and having all the ground ring interconnected with suitable earth rod would be sufficient. Please advise

To start with you have to collect the equipment Layout for the facility. By inspection you will understand whether there is a possibilities of step or touch potential occurring in the even of earth fault, by virtue of the equipment layout.

Then check whether there is a possibilities of having high Ground Potential Rise (GPR) with respect to remote earth. The excessive GRP would affect/harm your sensitive electronic/automation equipments.


Best thing is to run the simulatio0n in the software and verify/evaluate. Then, only if you find it necessary, provide the ground mat.


I am no sure about IEEE665.

In my opinion, it is difficult to achieve a grounding grid of entire power station yard as per IEEE 80.
At the substation[s], step-up transformer, along connecting overhead lines, and similar locations, you have to follow IEEE 80. However, for the specific grounding connections of buildings and auxiliary installations you have to follow IEEE 665 [even if IEEE 665 latest edition is from 1995 and IEEE 80 of 2013]
