Dear All
I am designing a packed scrubber column to scrub HCl generated from reactions. I am requiring a blower also at the outlet of scrubber. For selection and synchronisation of blower with that scrubber, i need to have an idea of pressure drop per meter of packed bed.Column dia. is 600 mm packing height 2.5 m( 1" raschig ring).

RE: pressure drop per meter of packed bed

Pressure drop will depend on several factors - pls read up on the Eckert flooding correlations for packed beds, which is narrated in most mass transfer texts. For example, see figure 14-48 in Perry Chem Engg Handbook, 7th edn. Industry practice is to keep the operating max flood factor to be no more than 80% of the predicted (per this correlation) theoretical max. Also take into account the exothermic heat release for this absorption reaction and the min permissible wetting rate (MWR) at min operating turndown. Also take into account the pressure drop through the tower bottom chimney tray, tower top demisters, top distributor and other fittings, nozzles.

RE: pressure drop per meter of packed bed

If you are looking just for a ballpark figure, the maximum operating pressure drop should be less than 0.1 bar.
