CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

(OP)
Hi to All,
We usually work in europe and Asia, and now we have some projects in CANADA. They are requiring to follow B51 regulation. This is for pressure vessels above ground with liquid inside in GRP. Is anyone familiar with it? what secction shall we go? any suggestions?

many thanks to all

Dr Gorostidi

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

CSA B51, refers to Section VIII, Division 1, Section VIII, Division 2, or Section VIII, Division 3 for pressure vessel design, construction, installation, inspection and testing. There are some other requirements in there that must also be met. You will have to obtain a CRN from the applicable province of installation before you begin construction.

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

What is the service?

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

(OP)
Thanks for the answer

The service is sort of filtering water under pressure. It is installed in a fish farm. We have all the papers and certifications for europe, but as you said, we have been required the CRN number, and for this task they have told us to check B51 regulation which is not know by our team

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

There are Canadian consultants that specialize in assisting manufacturers such as yourself. I would recommend finding one and working with them. There is more specificity in the particular Provinces, so the local/on-the-ground knowledge is necessary.

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

GRP? Glass Reinforced Plastic? Sec VIII (all Divisions) is out.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

There's a helpful set of flowcharts in CSA B51 which will help you find out whether or not your equipment, which is in this case handling water (i.e. a non-lethal substance not more hazardous than water). It is unlikely that you will need to apply pressure vessel code requirements to your filter unless the water is hot, your filter is gigantic or the pressure is very much higher than what I would expect to see used in a fish farm.

Thanks for all the answers

In this project the vessel is small (Ø520mm H=2000mm) and pressure in this time is 5 bars (73 psi)
In the rest of the proejcts the pressure is bellow 15 psi
Water temperature: max 25-30º C (86 ºF)

regards

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

B51 is not an extensive Code, being less than 150 pages...it references other Codes quite a bit, such as the ASME Codes. You should get a copy and investigate. Your main concern would be Sec. 4 for Registration of design and welding procedures. As others have stated, you should contact the regulatory authority in the province of installation. Each province has their own Boiler and Pressure Equipment Regulations. Google "Boiler and Pressure Equipment province of _______". That will get you started.

Dr Gorostidi,

Please look at the following links below. These links are from the website of TSSA,regulatorsin Ontario. Is this project applies to the other provinces of Canada, you've to search for the rules from the appropriate regulators' website.

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

At this diameter/pressure and temp. you may be exempt.

Thanks,
Our team will check your links. We have made the calculation with ASME, just need the CRN , thanks a lot.

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

What provinces will your equipment be installed into?

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

(OP)
Hello

The project covers

New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland

On the other hand, most are bellow 15 psi I i guess that no CRN number is required, only for those where we have more than 15 psi
am i right?

We are used to European legisltation, which is quite different

Dr Gorostidi

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

You may please refer CSA B 51-2014. Refer Fig-1(a), 1(b) and 1(c) at the back end of the document. These figures/roadmap together with associated clauses provides the clear guidelines for design registration requirements for various categories of BPV.

Also every province as stated above have their local BPV jurisdictions, with website. You may find other required details as mandated in each province. It does not harm to call or email them with your queries as as to get the required guidance.
Hope it would help.
Thanks.

RE: CANADA REGULATION PRESSURE VESSELS

CRN registration for all your stated provinces (NB, PEI, NS,and NFLD) are all covered under ACI Central.
