Difference between Adhesive Anchors and Post-installed reinforcing bars

Difference between Adhesive Anchors and Post-installed reinforcing bars

Hi,

In Hilti website they differentiate between adhesive anchors and Post-installed reinforcing bars. What is the difference between them, knowing that they inject adhesive for the latter?

The page on their website is the following:

Some of their epoxy systems have been tested such that they can also be used to develop a piece of post-installed rebar or be used in a lap splice application. Most other epoxy anchoring systems are not tested for this application (though realistically bond strength doesn't care what the brand name is). Without this qualification you're essentially limited to appendix D applications.

Hilti loves to promote this application and regular puts out some webinars on the subject. Their software can also help you specify such an application.

Exactly.. Bond strength doesn't care what the brand name is, and doesn't care if tension is being released or concentrated on epoxy adhesive or concrete itself. I personally don't think they can actually get over the pulling out cone mechanism when tension in rebar is larger than what concrete can take. I have lots of doubts when I see contractors insert 6~8 inch dowel in existing slab.

RE: Difference between Adhesive Anchors and Post-installed reinforcing bars

The breakout cone issue is more an issue with the way we deal with rebar in general, rather than a Hilti specific thing. I believe that the ICC reports for Hilti epoxies and rebar basically just say that you can treat the epoxied rebar like any other rebar.
