thread507-391632: ASCE7-10 Section 27.4.7 Minimum Wind Loads on Open Buildings

Good day, I am to design a park shade structure, using MWFRS method I obtained various pressure values in the range of 0.73 psf, now I modeled with STAAD and applied the min load of 16 psf (as per section27.1.5) as a distributed load on the roof, so am I using the code correctly? because ther's a big difference between the calculated and the min loads, and min load is requiring large sections.

RE: Minimum wind load as per ASCE 07-10

If you obtained a design load of 0.73psf originally, you did something wrong.

I'd suggest going back through your calculations. You should be getting a result in the order of 16 psf, probably higher. If 16psf is requiring what appears to be "large sections", you may have another error in your work, but I can't say what that might be.

RE: Minimum wind load as per ASCE 07-10

Note the MWFRS minimum wind load is applied to the vertical projection of the building, i.e., a horizontal force. Depending upon what slope your shade structure is, that should result in a fairly low load to the structure overall. The C&C minimum wind loads are perpendicular to the surface.
