SWG Gasket pressure=20,000 psi as per API660 9th edition (2015)
(OP)
Hi good day to everyone,
Spiral Wound Gasket (SWG) SS316L graphite filler with inner ring and outer ring, gasket seating pressure 'y' is 10,000 psi as per gasket vendor or ASME VIII-1 App-2, which has been used for may years in all industries without issue. However the minimum gasket pressure is 20,000 psi for SWG as per API660 9th edition (2015), Table-3 Assmbly Gasket Stress. This makes bolts size and flanges thickenss are greatly increased and huge cost impact, almost double cost. Anyone can advise the point of consideration y=20,000 psi for SWG by API660 9th edition (2015)?
Must we follow y=20,000 psi if design codes are both ASME VIII-1 and API660? We overlooked API660 Table-3 and 40 units heat exchangers desing as per ASME VIII-1 App. 2 only, use y=10,000 psi. Now our clien request us to use y=20,000 psi... any idea can help me to settle this issue? Thanks
