Steel Channel Identification

Steel Channel Identification

Steel Channel Identification

(OP)
We're evaluating an existing structure that was reinforced with channel that I'd like to identify. It's very heavy and not in any AISC books that I have. Data is limited here. The last attachment shows what appears to say 'MP303' while pointing to a channel in a similar preliminary design. But searches on that have lead me nowhere.

Anyone ever run across a shape like this before? Worst case I'll calc out the properties for this evaluation. But now I'm curious if there are some shapes out there that I could use otherwise.

RE: Steel Channel Identification

Can you provide the flange width, mean thickness and web thickness?

First link shows a sketch of the section with dims. It's 8" and had a 2 3/4" flange. 3/4" thick web and 1" flanges.

RE: Steel Channel Identification

Almost looks like a W8x67 with one set of flanges cut off.

I don't see any historical or common channel sections this thick.

RE: Steel Channel Identification

Weird, the profile they show in the plan view drawing almost looks like a heavy linear guide rail:

OP... didn't open the sketches, sorry... That's a massive C Section.

RE: Steel Channel Identification

This seems like a channel we would sometimes use to reinforce monopole telecomm towers during my time in that industry. We referred to them as "aerochannels". They are so heavy due to the restriction of fitting on the flats of these towers, which can get rather small near the top of the tower. We had specs from the manufacturer (at the time, Aero Solutions LLC) which listed all of the sectional & material properties.

See pg 47 of this pdf for an example (not my former employer). Link
