RC columns change size/shape

RC columns change size/shape

(OP)
Hello hi all,

Would like to ask your opinion/experience in designing rc column. The situation is it is a 10-storey high residential building. Lower floors say until level 5, the columns are square (eg. 600x600), however from level 5-8, the architect would like to change it to circular (eg 700 mm dia), from level 8 to 10, columns back to square. How do we approach this situation? What buildings have these kind of column transition? Column will be concrete.

Thanks for your input.

RE: RC columns change size/shape

If I was you, I'd ask the Architect if I could make the square columns 700 x 700 and just use the same round core section throughout. It's only a small amount larger.

RE: RC columns change size/shape

I think the design part of it will be the easiest part, simply model the columns with their appropriate geometry. You need to account for the stiffness of the different sections. The real challenge will be detailing and constructability. It can certainly be done, just more time consuming. The other option might be to just design one column type (round or square) and add concrete later to achieve the required column shape.

large trib areas? Can a 600 dia work?
