Why do we use log normal distributions for calculation of mean and other percentile response spectra ?

How do we know the a data will fit which distribution ?

How can we obtain percentile value for log normal distribution ?

The attached file is a good intro to statistics used for seismic. Page 6 (actually page 12 of the PDF) has a nice little aside-box answering the question of why the lognormal distribution is used. I hope this helps!
