Sulfides in Concrete

Sulfides in Concrete

Sulfides in Concrete

(OP)
I have to visit a client next week who believes the concrete work on her house that was constructed over 20 years ago contained aggregate that contained sulfides. She believes an aggregate that contained pyrrhotite was used and in recent years her slab on grade and foundation walls have begun to crack extensively. The problem she is having is not unique, and many people in her area are experiencing similar problems with aggregate that came out of one quarry and plant. However, since the house is over 20 years old, she has no idea where the concrete came from and can not prove the aggregate was used.

My question is in regards to detecting the resulting sulfides that might be present in the concrete. Is there anyway to determine if sulfides are present (through some sort of chemical test)? Or is this something where you should take a core sample of the concrete and perform a compression test to see if the concrete has been weakened by the presence of sulfides?

I am currently reading up what I can on the issue before I visit her site. I have not fully committed to help her out as I am not sure there is anything I can do.

RE: Sulfides in Concrete

Take a core and send it to a lab that can perform a petrographic analysis of the concrete per ASTM C295.
They can tell you what is in the concrete and probably test for sulfides.
