What FEA analysis is needed for Division 1 certification?

What FEA analysis is needed for Division 1 certification?

I am working on a pressure vessel for laboratory use that is designed per Division 1 rules. I have been doing extensive FEA on the design per Division 2 guidelines, but I am not clear what is required for ASME certification under Division 1 rules.

If the PV is based on Div 1 design by rule, what FEA documentation is required for the stamp?

RE: What FEA analysis is needed for Division 1 certification?

Stephen Max, all that is required for Div. 1 certification is that each feature of the vessel be designed per those rules, where such rules exist.

If Div. 1 rules exist, those rules must be followed and FEA or other techniques may not be used override them. FEA or other techniques may be used to supplement Div. 1 rules.

May surprise you to know but Div. 1 generally requires exactly no FEA.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

SnTMan is correct

Look for the words "U-2(g)" in the Code.
Wherever it says "Use U-2(g)", you can use other design method including FEA

RE: What FEA analysis is needed for Division 1 certification?

Stephen Max, another facet: Anybody can design a vessel to Sec. VIII. Div.1. Anybody can build one. However it may only be stamped if fabricated by an organization holding a Certificate of Authorization from ASME.

Mike

Thank you gentlemen for your replies. The vessel is indeed being fabricated by a machine shop with a certificate. Actually, I asked them the same question after posting this, they gave me the same answer. I should have asked him first but didn't think to. Again, thanks!
