Cantilever Calculation for a Unistrut Beam

Cantilever Calculation for a Unistrut Beam

Cantilever Calculation for a Unistrut Beam

(OP)
Hi all, this might be novice stuff, but I am a novice.
The reading I have done explains how to work out the forces and moments on a static cantilever beam, but not what is required at the support to provide these reaction forces and moments..

I need to make sure a cantilever Unistrut beam will be sufficient to hold a length of pipe.
The weight of the pipe per beam is 2.17 kN. So each beam support needs to hold 2.17 kN.
The beam support is two U-bolt clamps that grip a Universal Beam on each side.
Now if I want to ensure the support is sufficient (which I am 99% sure it is fine). Do I just need to look at the U-bolt bolts strength.
Say the threaded rod on the U-bolt has a rated loading of 9.28 kN (from manufacturer) and there is two of them to disperse the load so 9.28x2 =18.6 kN, which will hold 2.17 kN.
And that is just one U-bolt on its own..
There is a photo of the proposed pipe hanger attached. Also a schematic of how the beam holds is here: https://www.speedyfixings.com/product/u-bolt-type-...
Am I looking at this problem the correct way?
If moments need to be included in this calculation then the distance between pipe and clamps is 0.185m. So the moment at the pipe point is 401.5 Nm.

Thanks,

RE: Cantilever Calculation for a Unistrut Beam

You should work out the overturning moment due to the load applied at the offset. This moment will decouple into a force couple in each of the U-bolts. You can then check the UB flange bending for the tension load you have calculated.

Depending on the supporting section and the loads applied, you will need to assess whether bending, torsion etc. of the supporting section is also a concern, and you will want to consider deflection at the tip of the support as well.

I'm typically given very stringent deflections in pipework to work to provided by the Pipe Stress department, which are often much more of a controlling factor than the strength of the sections / components.

I also try and include some extra fat in the design to cater for possible adjustment / site fit up tolerances.

RE: Cantilever Calculation for a Unistrut Beam

Make sure you install the beam clamps flipped around the right way. The beam clamp assemblies (Unistrut P2785) are rated at 1,000 or 1,200 lbs depending on the literature you are using. Do not calculate the threaded rod separately. If you are connecting to a 6" wide flange you are going to be fine.
