Manhole cover material

Manhole cover material

Dear All,
I'm designing a special Manway for coded Vessel ( ASME Section VIII Div.1), my question is very simple : Can I use plate (SA-240-304 for example), for this attached manhole cover, which is fabricated from one machined piece, or it's mandatory to use only forged material?

Thanks.
Regards.

RE: Manhole cover material

Did you calculate the MAWP or are you going to do it by proof test?

RE: Manhole cover material

Pretty pictures to be sure, but who can tell what the thing looks like?

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

RE: Manhole cover material

As mentioned above, if designed and made by the Code and strong to pass the test, the plate can be used for the many cover. Is there any reason to have a special design of the plate cover?

Hi,
À response to Don56, no proof test is expected, i calculate the MAWP,
I Know that habitually the blind or cover flange is made from plate, but is it still true with this special shape,
And by the way the raison for this shape is requirement of sanitary application .
Thanks.
Regards

RE: Manhole cover material

There are some tight radios and it would depend on plate thickness as to whether it would be practical. Most probably a forging would provide the better shape with less machining.
