Steel Plate Bending @ Both Axis

Steel Plate Bending @ Both Axis

Steel Plate Bending @ Both Axis

(OP)
Hi,

I am designing a steel plate to carry concrete blocks. Plates will be located at 2' O.C and will span between two HSS Posts. The plate will be taking gravity load from the cmu blocks and lateral load from seismic which means it will tend to bend in both axis minor and major. AISC Section F-11 addresses to major and minor but how about both ? Do you guys have any ideas on this issue ?

Thank you ,

RE: Steel Plate Bending @ Both Axis

loti, I notice a lot of your posts indicate that you're looking for a specific equation in a certain code to solve your problem. My opinion on this, and I'm saying this with respect (just trying to be helpful) - you should forget about what AISC has to say about this for a few minutes. Work out the bending stress from each direction. Take a look at the locations of maximum stress and what other stresses are occurring at that location. If you have your mechanics of materials text book from school, take a look at that to see how the stresses all come together. Once you understand the mechanics of what is happening, then I would suggest looking for the code reference to backup what you've determined from first principles.

Combining bending stresses is straight forward, and I'm sure AISC addresses this somewhere...but in my opinion it would be best if you understood the fundamentals of what is happening before plugging in values to some code referenced equation.
