Peck drilling - nx11 - what, where, how!

Peck drilling - nx11 - what, where, how!

(OP)
Hi Guys,
I have a question about peck drilling in NX11. I tried to read up about this on the Siemens forum and watch some youtube videos, this all left me a little confused. One video showed NX11 being used and the primary create operation drop down has a 'drill' option, in here was a peck drilling sub op - all fine but I don't have that. Here is the video link:

I read on the Siemens forum about old drilling methods and new drilling methods - I have no idea what is what. How do I create a peck drill operation in nx11? Is there a sub option drop down? Do I have to make my own?

Can someone tell me what drilling operations are now supported and in what versions they are active and how?

many thanks,
James

You say you don't have a "drill" operation. Mine shows "hole making" with the drilling and tapping operations under that. NX11.0.2.7

Hi John,
hole making I have but there is no 'peck drilling' sub option there....

Am I missing something?

cheers,
james

Is peck drilling functionality now simply rolled up into the drilling operation? If I change motion output to 'single moves' I then get the option to select the cycle 'drilling with chip removal' - is this now peck driling?

cheers,
james

Ok, looks like drilling, single moves, drilling with chip removal does close to what I want i.e. peck drilling. What I can't see is how to control the depth of the first 'peck' - this is important to control depending upon the material type being drilled. Any one know how this works?

Am I right all the other stuff is deprecated and this is now the main drilling option/method?

cheers,
James

RE: Peck drilling - nx11 - what, where, how!

I'll admit I don't do a lot of drilling and I usually copy an old operation that uses the old "peck drill". It looks to me that "machine cycle" uses the CNC canned cycle in the post proccesor and "single moves" generates individual moves without the canned cycle, but that probably depends on how your post-processors are set up. " I think you're going to have to experiment with "Drill,Deep" and "Drill, Deep, Break Chip".

@mechjames
Yes, the old drilling types, which are called point-to-point, have been deprecated. I'm not even sure if they are accessible anymore without enabling them.

For peck settings in a drilling operation I believe you need go to Path Settings-Cycle and set it there. Depending on your post processor...Drill should output something like a G81 or G82 and Drill,Deep should output a G83. For the latter you will have options to set peck to whatever you need.

If you have NX docs, Hole Machining Topics has a lot of useful information and you will probably be surprised at how much you can do with Hole Making operations. There are many different types to cover just about anything you need to do. Being totally model aware, Hole Making has the ability to handle conical holes, how the drill handles holes with different floor types (flat/conical drill tip), has control over the depth of either drill tip or shoulder past through holes and also how to handle geometry that exists below a through hole. Also, if your amount and type of work is suited for it you may find the uber automation in Hole Making useful but if you have only occasional need for drilling then you can always go manual as well. NX is flexible like that; makes programmer life a breeze.

Hi Guys,
many thanks for the help. What you said is correct. Holes drilled and now I am having a play with the options...

cheers!
James
