Non-structural Component Seismic Design

Non-structural Component Seismic Design

Non-structural Component Seismic Design

(OP)
I am designing a concrete wall 11' h x 9'-4'' l . The wall is comprised of architectural concrete blocks which has a specific pattern on the face of it. Each block is only 17 lbs. The seismic force acting on the wall is 700 lbs based on ASCE 7-10 13.3. I am planning to support the wall laterally by using HSS 4x2x1/4 @ 3' O.C along the wall. My main concern is how to achieve stability of the blocks since I can not reinforce the wall because of architectural reasons. I was wondering how I can achieve it without using rebars. I would really appreciate if I can get a response.

Thank you,

RE: Non-structural Component Seismic Design

I’m assuming the blocks will have masonry grout? Have you looked at ACI 530 in their unreinforced section? The blocks might have enough capacity otherwise you’ll have to figure out a way to brace them.

RE: Non-structural Component Seismic Design

Maybe I am not understanding your problem, but if you are supporting the wall laterally w/ HSS, wouldn't the HSS also provide stability of the wall?

RE: Non-structural Component Seismic Design

My interpretation is that the OP was concerned the blocks might not have the strength to transfer the seismic load to the HSS braces.

Yes my concern is to transfer the seismic load to the HSS posts. These blocks are not really cmu blocks which means they will not be grouted or reinforced, and they will not be stacked on their hollow faces. They will be stacked on their 4" face with mortar.
Each block is 4"d x11"w x 16" h

Veneer ties?

how should I check if the bond strength is fine for lateral seismic force ? any equations ?
