Reading Das Principles of Geotechnical Engineering, chapter introducing shear failure.
A statement was made, that Mohr himself claims “all” material fail by a combination of shear and normal stresses.
1) Where can one find the supporting arguments?
2) What about a general case of a thin steel plate in tension. From lab experiments, the rupture line is basically linear. Not to mention, no stresses on minor principal planes, this no Mohrs Circle.

Initially, it did not occur to me a differential element would be under tension about the major axis, and negative tension about the minor axis. Negative tension would be compression, presumably explained by Poissons effect.
The question was general, not requiring a rigorous explanation. Unless my conceptual understanding was seriously flawed.
