How to displace an entire part?
How to displace an entire part?
(OP)
Hi all
I have a part (long tube) that I want to displace and deform around a bend. Think of it as inserting a catheter into an artery and it bending around a radius of curvature.
How can I do this in Abaqus CAE/Explicit? I am new to learning this (have done some problems in college, and have a basic understanding of the software) and simply displacing at one end a fixed distance does not displace the entire part, but rather just that face. I have modeled the bend as a rigid body for now, as I do not care for any outputs experienced by that body.
I understand that this might be a simple thing, but Its been bugging me and I can't get around it!
Thank you in advance!
Tom

I'm only modelling the bend as a rigid body as I do not care for any field outputs experienced by the bend. I suppose if it causes an issue I can just coarsely mesh it.
This image should give you an idea of what im going for.
RE: How to displace an entire part?
The first one is like in reality. You define contact between the parts and contacts and push the rod into the tube. As long as it is not buckling, it should slide through the tube like in reality. It would help if the front of the rod has no sharp edges.
The second option is numerical easier, but involves more modeling. You place the rod in the straight part of the tube. In front of the rod is a coupling. In the center of the tube radius is another reference node. Between the two reference nodes you place a connector (type 'cylindrical' e.g.). Then you can rotate the center reference node to drag the rod through the curved part of the tube.
Since I assume that this is no dynamic problem, but quasi-static, you should use mass scaling to get acceptable analysis time with A/Explicit.

RE: How to displace an entire part?
I'm modelling the PTCA procedure. Not the entire procedure but just insertion of a balloon catheter into and around some artery model with a level of tortuosity. I'm quantifying trackability and pushability for different catheter designs. The varying design parameters relate solely to the hypotube component of the balloon catheter.
I have experimental data doing insertions into arterial models, looking to compare FE analysis of the insertion to my experimental data gathered. There were no complications with the experiments conducted, it was based off established experimental setups for track and push force quantification.
I have done a variety of FEA problems but only a few relate to the mechanics that im trying to replicate here! So im learning how to cover these topics as I go! The setup shown in the image above is a simplified version of what my actual analysis will be, just trying to get a grasp of what I want to do with this first.
