Sway Frame using Circular Hollow Section Columns

Sway Frame using Circular Hollow Section Columns

Hi Everyone,
Interesting one for you all. My Arch won't let me use a box section or UC column sections in my sway Frame. I have a UB section for the horizontal cross member but he insists on using Circular Hollow Sections for the columns. My query is how do I make the connection of beam to column that will transfer moment.

RE: Sway Frame using Circular Hollow Section Columns

The first things that come to mind for me are:
  • AISC 358 has a concrete filled tube column to WF beam connection. It may be a bit overkill for non-seismic
  • If it's at the roof level, then run the beam over the top of the column and use a cap plate.
  • AISC design guide 24 has examples. Figure 3-1b. Figure 4-2. Figure 4-4. Some of them have design calculations to go with it.
Hopefully, that's at least a little helpful.
