Does Annealing Age Hardened HF or CD QQ-N-286 make everything equal?

Does Annealing Age Hardened HF or CD QQ-N-286 make everything equal?

Does Annealing Age Hardened HF or CD QQ-N-286 make everything equal?

(OP)
I was wondering if The Annealing process of Rod & Bar made all things equal in HF & CD.
I realize in QQ-N-286, Table III it refers to note 3 which says, applicable to both HF & CD.
I just didn't know if this also included properties like grain structure etc.

RE: Does Annealing Age Hardened HF or CD QQ-N-286 make everything equal?

Torq444...

Hmmmm... another alloy I'm unfamiliar with.

Carefully re-read QQ-N-286. I think what you want to know is embedded within the spec [word-search 'grain']. The ASTM specification for grain size determination, plus several other relevant citations about grain, are present and are fairly explicit.

CAUTION.
The following referenced MIL-STDs are DoD/USN 'Controlled Distribution', which means You have to have a 'need-to-know' to get them. IF serious about using this material then You should have them for a complete understanding of it... and MAY include info on how to control, and inspect-for, this alloy's grain size/quality.
MIL-STD-1684 - Control of Heat Treatment.
MIL-STD-2132 - Nondestructive Examination Requirements for Special Applications.

This is K-500 Monel, go look up the data from Special Metals (formerly INCO).
HF and CD+annealed are not the same product.
If you look at data for HF+age vs CD+ann+age you will see different sets of properties.

RE: Does Annealing Age Hardened HF or CD QQ-N-286 make everything equal?

Cold drawing results in increased tensile properties versus the same heat treatment except hot finishing when annealing and subsequent age hardening is performed on this alloy. The cold work increases sensitivity to age hardening increasing strength. Grain size is not a property but can be affected by cold work so to avoid excessive grain growth, the annealing temperature may be lowered slightly when cold drawing is used.
