ASME Sec VIII Div1 Lethal service and PWHT

ASME Sec VIII Div1 Lethal service and PWHT

ASME Sec VIII Div1 Lethal service and PWHT

(OP)
We have Pig trap (ASME Sec VIII Div1) under Lethal Service having Quick opening door (QOC).
Vessel requires PWHT per UW-2 Lethal service requirements.

Query: Quick opening Closure (QOC) was welded to Pig trap and the PWHT was done inline with Code requirements for Lethal Service. However the Closure door which was hinged to QOC was removed and has not undergone PWHT.

Is this is acceptable scenario to have hinged part not undergoing PWHT and what is the specific reference in DIV1 for such exemption.

RE: ASME Sec VIII Div1 Lethal service and PWHT

I assume the door was assembled and welded sometime in th epast.

Is this the first time the vessel has ever been repaired?
Was the door welded or repaired during this specific repair?
Was the assembly (door and vessel) assembled, welded, PWHT and NDE, and hydrotested as an assembly before starting this repair job that required your question?

RE: ASME Sec VIII Div1 Lethal service and PWHT

(OP)
It is new Vessel with new QOC and U stamped.

Quick actuating door assembly hub is welded to Pig trap. The hinged Door was removed and had not gone under PWHT, entire vessel was done.

After PWHT the door was hydro tested. Required NDE has been done.

Is the door of welded construction? There's your answer.

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Thanks Mike for response.

Door is SA 350Lf2 CL1 but having weldoverlay and some fillet welds for attachment.
Can we still live with it ?

There are various Code interpretations on this issue:
Record no. 15-634
Question : Are corrosion resistant weld metal overlay welds or welds attaching corrosion resistant applied linings on carbon steel vessels in lethal service exempt from the PWHT when applied following the provisions of Table UCS-56-1, General Note (b)(3)(e)?

Reply : Yes.

Record no. 14-1910
Question: For a P No 1 material , does General Note (b)(3)(e) of Table UCS-56-1 provide an exemption to postweld heat treatment of the weld overlay cladding applied to a carbon steel vessel that is designated to be in lethal service?
Reply: Yes.

So if you meet the requirements of Table UCS-56 notes, PWHT of door can be exempted.

RE: ASME Sec VIII Div1 Lethal service and PWHT

Due to fillet welds PWHT is required.

Weld metal overlay: test should be made to assure freedom from damage to the load carrying base material.

PWHT per Code and everybody can live with it.
