Chapter K Aisc LRFD - U factor calculation

Chapter K Aisc LRFD - U factor calculation

(OP)
Hi all

I'd like to ask about calculating the U factor in chapter K specially for table K1.1 for longitudinal plate T, I wonder why the values of Pr0 and Mr0 should be with the side of the joint that has minimum compression stress..what this statement mean specially
in the design examples he took the higher compression strength. Kindly refer to the attachment for Table k1.1 and you can find the factor U below. Kindly advise all,Thanks

RE: Chapter K Aisc LRFD - U factor calculation

It's poor wording. Use the compression force through the HSS.

That is, the plate force each side of the HSS applies an equal compression force that should be considered. That's the force that causes HSS local yielding/plastification. Any remaining force due to unbalanced plate loads is through some other load path, whether it be through a brace or HSS shear. That remaining forces does not need to be considered for HSS local yielding/plastification.

Thanks
So that the conclusion I should take the max. straining actions on the HSS only (Compression & Major and Minor Moment).

another question please if i have two different connections connected to same HSS COLUMN as per attached detail at same level with difference in horizontal angle for example 30 degree..How can i check this as HSS Plastification? Should each one checked seperatly or make analytical for the forces..in another words..when i check plastification for connection detail No.1 should i calculate Rn and compare it with the summation of P1 + P2 COS30 OR P1 ONLY THEN Compare ALSO Rn with P2.

Thanks
