Soil Allowable Bearing Capacity - NBC 2015

Soil Allowable Bearing Capacity - NBC 2015

(OP)
Hello Everyone,

Our firm has taken the initiative to get work in Canada, so I'm responsible for incorporating all the requirements from NBC into our drawings that are based on US Codes.

Before I go into detail, please note that I don't have a geotech report, since this is a prototype building (not site specific. I found the allowable bearing pressures for Soils in table 9.4.4.1. The project site is in Saskatoon, where the typical frost depth is 6'. With my footings that deep, I'm running into issues with soil bearing capacity due Gravity as well as overturning loads. Does the code allow an increase in bearing capacity based on the depth of the footing?

Also, I'm assuming that I can use the SLS loads for checking soil, correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks!

RE: Soil Allowable Bearing Capacity - NBC 2015

Does your building qualify under part 9?

Generally the bearing pressures listed there are conservative. Most Jurisdictions require geotechnical reports for all part 3 buildings.

In that area, piles may also be the most economical type of foundation depending on loading and building type.
