What do you guys typically dimension your slot connections to accomodate: inelastic or elastic? Why?

RE: Stair Slot Length (Inelastic vs elastic drift)

ASCE requires that deformation compatibility be checked using the inelastic story drift (Section 12.12.5) since that is the expected movement of the structure during an earthquake. When detailing the connection, consider the impact of underestimating the drift. If failure of the connection would cause collapse or loss of vertical load carrying capacity, consider detailing for an increased level of drift. See Section 12.12.4 for some ideas on what that might entail.
